Having produced a couple of documentaries on the history of Johor, we decided to explore the more northern states of peninsula Malaysia and undertook an epic road trip up the east coast, across the top, and down the west coast. This was mid-2020, so we visited as many museums and sites of historical interest as the COVID-19 restrictions allowed. We discovered the ancient history of Kedah and delighted at seeing the 11,000 year old Perak Man. But we were mostly struck by the Brits who came to Malaya, in search of fame and fortune, in the second half of the 19th century. On our return to Johor Bahru, Lawrence produced a series of blogs to fill out information about these characters that we had touched on in our daily vlogs. This book is a collation of all this material and is intended to inspire other visitors to this country to look beyond the shopping malls of Kuala Lumpur!
